Diwali is the one week of the year when half of Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Vizag heads somewhere else. Bus seats sell out, cab fares jump, and trains are full. The real question is not which option is cheapest in the abstract, but which one fits your group, your luggage and your dates. This guide compares self drive vs cab vs bus for a Diwali trip, with a worked cost example and a short booking checklist.

🔍 Quick Answer

Bus is usually cheapest for one traveller on a single leg. Cab is easiest for a short, one-way ride but can cost more in festival week. Self drive tends to win for 3 or more people, trips with luggage, or plans with several stops, because one flat rate is shared. Our rates start at ₹1,500 per 24 hours (400 km), and fuel and tolls are extra. WhatsApp us your dates, since festival cars go early.

Why Diwali Travel Is Different From a Normal Weekend Trip

A normal weekend trip is flexible: you can shift the day, choose the hour and usually find a seat or a cab. Diwali is the opposite. Almost everyone wants to travel on the same two or three days, so demand for buses, trains and cabs peaks together. Four things change in festival week:

Because of this, the best option is the one that gives you the most control over timing and space. That is the main argument for self drive in festival week, and it is also why booking early matters so much. If you drive yourself, you decide when to leave, where to stop and when to come back.

A Worked Cost Example: Vijayawada to Hyderabad Round Trip

Vijayawada to Hyderabad is about 275 km each way, so a round trip is around 550 km. A 2-day booking includes about 800 km (400 km per 24 hours), so the trip fits within it. Here is the rental cost for 2 days at our current rates, before fuel and tolls:

Car24-hr rate2 days (rental only)Per person (4 people)
WagonR CNG / Tigor₹1,500₹3,000₹750
Maruti Dzire (2026)₹1,799₹3,598₹900
Hyundai Creta₹3,000₹6,000₹1,500
Innova Crysta₹4,500₹9,000₹1,500 (shared by 6)

Add fuel and tolls on top. To compare fairly, get the round-trip bus fare for every person in your group, or the cab quote for both legs, for your actual Diwali dates, and compare the totals. Festival-week prices change daily, so check them on the day you book. The extra-hour charge is ₹400 on most cars if you keep the car beyond the booked slot.

Four Common Diwali Travel Situations

1. One person going home alone. A single leg, one bag, no stops. A bus seat is usually the cheapest option, and a self drive car is rarely worth it unless you also need a car at your destination. If you have a few days at home and want to visit relatives, a 12-hour or 24-hour rental can still make sense.

2. A couple with luggage. Two people with gifts and a suitcase each. A hatchback such as the WagonR CNG or Tigor at ₹1,500 per 24 hours is the cost-effective choice, and you avoid squeezing bags into a shared bus hold. Compare the total for a 2-day booking with two bus tickets each way.

3. A family of four. This is where self drive tends to win. A Dzire at ₹1,799 per 24 hours, or a Swift or Baleno at ₹2,500, covers four people and their bags for one flat price, which you split four ways. Add fuel and tolls and compare against four bus tickets or a cab quote for the whole trip.

4. A joint family of six or seven. A single Innova Crysta, Carens, Ertiga or Marazzo replaces several cab bookings. At ₹4,500 per 24 hours for the Innova Crysta, a 2-day booking is ₹9,000 for the rental, about ₹1,286 per person for seven people, before fuel and tolls. Check the current rate for the other 7-seaters when you book, since they are priced separately.

A Sample 3-Day Diwali Plan by Self Drive

  1. Day before Diwali, early morning: pick up the car, load bags and start the drive home before the late-morning traffic builds
  2. Day before Diwali, afternoon: arrive, settle in and do last-minute shopping with the car
  3. Diwali day: short local trips for family visits and temple stops. A 12-hour slot may be enough if you keep the car for a single day.
  4. Day after Diwali: visit relatives in nearby towns, or rest. Avoid starting the long return drive if it is the heaviest travel day.
  5. Return day: leave early in the morning, keep breaks every 2 to 3 hours and return the car on time

If your plan is longer than 2 days, tell us the full dates when you book, so we can quote the right slots and confirm the car for the whole period.

Travelling With Elders and Children

Many Diwali trips include grandparents and young children, and that changes which option is best. A self drive car lets you set the pace, so you can stop for rest, food or a washroom break without waiting for a bus halt. A few practical points:

CNG or Petrol for a Long Festival Drive?

Fuel is the biggest cost after the rental, so the fuel type matters on a long trip. We have CNG options such as the WagonR CNG, Exter CNG, Brezza CNG and Ertiga CNG. On a long highway drive, a CNG car can keep fuel cost lower, but plan your CNG stops, since CNG stations are fewer than petrol pumps and can have queues in festival week. If you are not sure of the stations on your route, a petrol car gives you more flexibility. Ask us which cars are available for your dates and route.

Questions to Ask Before You Book Any Rental Car

Myths About Self Drive in Festival Week

"Self drive is always more expensive than a bus." For one person, often yes. For a group, the flat rate is shared, so the per-person cost can be competitive, and you also get a car at your destination.

"A cab is easier, so it must be better." A cab saves you the driving, but festival-week demand can push prices up, and you depend on one driver's schedule. If you are comfortable driving, you keep control.

"I should wait and book closer to the date." The opposite is usually true. The cars people want, such as SUVs and 7-seaters, are the first to go in festival week.

"The price I see is the price I pay." Check the full cost for any option: fuel and tolls for a rental, surge and waiting charges for a cab, and any seat or luggage charges for a bus.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Frequently Asked Questions

Is self drive cheaper than a cab or bus for a Diwali trip?

It depends on how many people are travelling and how long you need the car. For one person on a single leg, a bus is usually the cheapest. For three or four people, or for a trip with several stops, a flat self drive rate shared between the group often works out lower than several bus tickets or a cab with surge pricing.

When should I book a self drive car for Diwali?

As early as you can. Festival weeks are busy, and SUVs and 7-seaters such as the Innova Crysta go first. Message us your dates now so we can confirm the car you want.

How many kilometres are included in a 2-day booking?

Our rate card includes 400 km per 24 hours, so a 2-day booking covers about 800 km. Vijayawada to Hyderabad is about 275 km each way, so a round trip of around 550 km fits within 2 days.

Can I pick up a car in one city and return it in another during Diwali?

One-way service between Vijayawada, Hyderabad and Vizag is available on request. Tell us your route and dates, and we will confirm availability and any extra charge.

What is the best car for a family Diwali trip?

The Hyundai Creta suits four or five people with bags, and the Innova Crysta, Carens, Ertiga or Marazzo suit six or seven. For two or three people, a Dzire or Swift keeps the cost down.

What documents do I need to rent a car for Diwali?

A valid driving licence at least 1 year old, a government photo ID such as Aadhaar or passport, and a live selfie for verification. A refundable security deposit applies.

How do I avoid traffic on the Diwali return day?

Avoid the busiest day and the late afternoon, leave early in the morning if you can, keep FASTag ready for toll plazas and allow extra time. Having your own car lets you change the departure time freely.

Are fuel and tolls included in the rental price?

No. Fuel and tolls are billed separately on every booking. Our prices include the vehicle and standard insurance.

Can I rent a car for just one day during Diwali?

Yes. A 12-hour booking (200 km) or 24-hour booking (400 km) is available. A single day suits local family visits and temple trips. Confirm the slot for your car when you book.

Is self drive safe for a long highway trip with family?

It can be, with sensible planning. Start early, take breaks every 2 to 3 hours, avoid late-night driving, keep to speed limits and choose a car that is comfortable for your group. Our cars are checked and sanitized before every handover.

Do you deliver cars for Diwali trips?

In Vijayawada we can deliver to your home, hotel, the railway station or Gannavaram Airport, or you can collect from our MG Road office in Labbipet. Message us for pickup options in Hyderabad and Vizag.

Can I extend my rental if my plans change?

Extra hours are charged at ₹400 on most vehicles. For a longer extension, message us as early as possible, since the car may be booked for the next customer in festival week.

Which cars are best for a Diwali trip with lots of luggage?

The Creta, Innova Crysta, Carens, Ertiga and Marazzo have more boot and cabin space. For a smaller group, the Dzire or Baleno offer good space for the price.

Should I choose CNG or petrol for a Diwali road trip?

CNG cars can lower fuel cost on long drives, but CNG stations are fewer, so plan your stops. A petrol car gives more flexibility on routes where you are unsure of CNG availability.
